Ranitidine HCl is a histamine-2 receptor blocker, or H2 blocker. It is available over-the-counter to treat acid reflux and heartburn. Doctors use prescription-strength ranitidine to treat GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), ulcers, and other stomach conditions. Zantac is the brand name.
